Inspired by the Tamil saying, “மாற்றம் ஒன்றே மாறாதது”(matrum ondrae maaraathathu)

Translation: Change is the only unchangeable thing

The bird sits alone,

Waiting, and mulling boredom,

Feeling like dust float.

Change, ablaze unchanged,

Immortalising in time,

A one-way swaying.

Thinking as time ticks,

Music plays with every swish

To flourish the soil.

The dirt moves and shifts,

Rooting deep into the ground,

Just as change, changes.

The root digs deep down,

Unearth! A flower blooms high.

Sedulously ploughed.

A fleeting moment,

The bird swoops to pluck away,

In a second, gone!

As the flower rots,

The soil slides and shifts roughly,

Still rooted below.

Covert growth and strength     ,

I live in constant movement.

Like bird and flower.

  • Kasthury is a lost naadodi (Tamil for wanderer/nomad) who is an emerging spoken word poet. She is currently back at home with her Patti, learning to grow some roots, and giving back to the country that gave her so much. When she is not writing clarity into multifarious thoughts and performing expressions over a microphone, Kasthury volunteers with organisations and works with at-risk children from the urban poor of Malaysia. Having been published in multiple magazines and online publications, she strives to soon spread her words farther and collaborate creatively across mediums. She hopes her writing evokes emotions, catching readers and listeners at their sensitive feelings. Her work can be found online at @LostNaadodi on instagram.
