Submission Guidelines
Demos Journal publishes a range of formats and styles, including: long form articles, essays, feature articles (of visual art, music and photography), opinion pieces, book reviews, reviews (of local events, artistic, musical, poetic, political or other), poems, short stories, mixed media creative writing and interviews.
For each of these formats there are certain requirements for the submission:
- Feature Articles: Min 500 words, Max 1, 500 words. Ideally a feature article will exhibit that the author has done the relevant research on the chosen topic and will therefore provide some background on the topic for the readers. The piece should aim to promote a forum of ideas and encourage readers to engage in critical thinking and discussion.
- Poetry: one poem or a suite of clearly interconnected poems of up to 100 lines.
- Essays: Min 1,500 words, Max 2,500 words. Harvard style footnotes and bibliography required.
- Long Form Essays: Min 2,500 words, Max 6,000 words. Harvard style in text referencing required and full annotated bibliography provided.
- Opinion Pieces (Comment): Min 500 words, Max 800 words.
- Reviews (book, play, event or other): Min 500 words, Max 800 words.
- Short Stories: Min 800 words, Max 2,000.
- Visual Pieces: To be pitched to editorial team.
These guidelines are to ensure submissions remain true to their format and are easily publishable. Demos Journal promotes creative approaches and critical thinking. For this reason, if a submission falls outside these requirements, it may still be considered for publication.
With regard to creative pieces, we are non-prescriptive and champion experimentation, subversion, playfulness and creative approaches that resist easy categorisation. We do not, by contrast, promote art that is didactically political in its form or content.
Submissions are accepted via email at demosjournal@gmail.com.
Demos Journal only publishes what is previously unpublished in either print or digital form. We do not accept simultaneous submissions. All work must include the source material for work other than the contributor’s that is included in the piece.
All work submitted to Demos Journal is submitted with the expectation of working in conjunction and collaboration with the Editorial Team.
Demos Journal acquires first rights for all work published with reprint rights reverting to the author after publication. In the case of reprints, we ask that the author include an acknowledgment of Demos Journal as the place of first publication. Demos Journal takes its journalistic integrity seriously and will not work with or publish material by contributors who have submitted plagiarised or defamatory material.
